Norton-Hoff model for deformation of growing solid shell of thin slab casting in funnel-shape mold

Abstract A funnel-type mold is commonly used to provide necessary clearance for the submerged entry nozzle in thin slab casting (TSC). The partially solidified shell subjected mechanical deformations, which can lead defects formation and, as a results, breakout. Traditionally, results of flow simulation, performed by finite volume method (FVM), are fed external package element analysis stress and strain. coupled model was assembled using “creeping solid” approach blending Norton-Hoff viscoplastic solidifying with Newtonian viscous liquid melt. FVM combine both solid models within single solver. iterative procedure based on improved side diffusion introduced treat nonlinear relation between strain rate. modeled thickness verified previously published breakout measurements simulation results. Temperature distribution, obtained during TSC dominantly corresponds range. Developed numerical robust has direct industrial application.
